Set in the war-torn country of Yivyn, the story follows Elias Brook, a cowardly, self-centered thief accused of causing the events that started the civil war and ruin of Yivyn. While picking over the remains of a battlefield, an inadequate haul sets the other scavengers on Elias and he is fatally wounded, but manages to escape into the forest to die. 

Death proves not to be the end for Elias, he awakens in the world between life and death in conversation with a spirit named Mibotha. Mibotha claims to have prevented the eternal damnation of Elias’ soul to give him an ultimatum: restore peace to Yivyn. Fail, and he will wander the hellish realm of Valka forever. With no alternative, Elias accepts Mibotha’s terms and is brought back to life with the spirit inhabiting his body to keep him alive and on the right path.

The self-righteous Mibotha and the pessimistic, snarky Elias make an unlikely duo, but Mibotha thrusts Elias onto the path to redemption. Elias meets the scattered and secretive Royal Guard, still protecting the heirs of the king Elias betrayed to his death, including Princess Amira. Elias buys his life by convincing them he can lead them to the Regalia. While not trusting Elias, the Royal Guard and Amira set out to reclaim the Regalia and put Amira back on the throne.

As Elias and the Royal Guard work together, more is learned about Elias’s involvement in the events five years ago that caused the war, including the identity of the king’s real killer, Oliver Bones. Elias discovers that Oliver Bones is still alive and seeking to kill Amira as he did her father. To square his debt to Mibotha, Elias must not only work together with the Royal Guard to protect her from her enemies, crown her, and place her back on the throne, but he must also defeat Oliver Bones, one of the deadliest men in the world.
